HOLY DAYS!
Some of you may have towels which are not to be used in your house. Decorative things which are set apart to be seen and not soiled. Holy means to be set apart from common use. Like there are towels or other things in our life to be set apart, so are days or seasons of the year.
In time, “holy days” became “holidays” and the sense of holy or set apart was set aside. It has become synonymous with busy, hectic, economic, and scattered. It is a frenetic rush to meet shopping needs and to prepare for family time. The holidays force the need for rest!
Christmas marks the time when an ancient promise was fulfilled that a Savior would be given. In the quiet life of a young girl, a Child was born. His name symbolizes that He would save His people from their sins. A baby born to save.
January rings in a New Year. Named for the Roman god Janus, the one of two faces – there are two ways any beginning takes – any New Year is an uncertain time. So, we bless each other with “Happy New Year” with the hope that it will be.
For at least these two reasons, the birth of Jesus and the start of a New Year, set aside time and make the days holy. Enjoy time with your family, our Cadets, and send them back loved and refreshed!
Sincerely,

Academics
Testing: SAT - January 28, 2012 here at ORMA (Test center # 34622). The registration deadline is December 30, 2011. ACT - February 11, 2012. Most ORMA cadets test at Page High School, Greensboro. The Commandant’s Office will provide transport for boarding cadets. Registration deadline is January 13, 2012.
VMI Event: An annual event, the alumni information session of Virginia Military Institute, will be held in Greensboro (at First Lutheran Church, 3600 West friendly Ave.) on Thursday, January 5, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. “[They] are especially interested in juniors and sophomores (and their parents). . . however, high school seniors and their parents are also welcomed.” ORMA will provide transportation to the event for boarding cadets. If you think you (or your cadet) are (or if he/she SHOULD BE) interested, please let me know! We have to submit a “guest list” in advance.
Parents of Seniors: This is the time of year when admission decisions—acceptances and denial and sometimes otherwise—begin to be handed down. Colleges rarely communicate those decisions to us, and students are notoriously lax in doing so. Accordingly, if you know the disposition of your cadet’s application(s), please email me so that it can be recorded.

Corps of Cadets
The ORMA Corps of Cadets has been in transition since the start of the academic school year to a student run military organization. The Cadet leadership has accepted the challenge and the Cadet Corps has essentially become a leadership laboratory. The Cadets are led by Cadet Officers and Sergeants. The lessons they’re learning have leadership applications both in and out of uniform. The success of our Cadets is a result of placing the ROTC classroom leadership theory into practice. This enables Cadets to learn respect for authority and sharpen their leadership skills. So as we close out 2011, our Corps of Cadets is structured and organized to start 2012 with purpose and ready to fully embrace the JROTC Cadet Creed:
I am an Army JROTC Cadet. I will always conduct myself to bring credit to my family, country, school, and the corps of Cadets.
I am loyal and patriotic. I am the future of the United States of America.
I do not lie, cheat, or steal and will always be accountable for my actions and deeds.
I will always practice good citizenship and patriotism.
I will work hard to improve my mind and strengthen my body.
I will seek the mantle of leadership and stand prepared to uphold the Constitution and the American way of life.
May God grant me the strength to always live by this creed.
