Mrs.
Amy Stoller is our Guidance Counselor who
is single handedly responsible for placing
each one of the Academy’s graduates into
a college. She is very successful at what
she does and, by the “Ides of March", Mrs. Stoller will have all thirty-three of them placed in a good college or
university. As of today, twenty two of
our future alums have been welcomed by
26 different colleges or universities nationwide,
including Tulane University, Lehigh University,
UNC-Wilmington, West Texas A & M, and Cazenovia College in NY - as well as several military colleges such as
the Citadel and Virginia Military Institute.
It is also worth noting that a few of this
year’s graduates have full or partial scholarships
to the colleges of their choice. That is
very good considering just how small a
school we are. We are proud of our cadets
and their college acceptances. The parents
of our ‘08 Class are not surprised at their
children’s accomplishments and are very
appreciative of their choice of a pre-college
high school.
ORMA's
Weight Room is receiving a ten thousand
dollar face-lift, thanks to the gracious
gift by Keith and Clair Shipes, parents
of Cadet Aaron Shipes. Each year, I am
happy to report former cadets or the parents
of current cadets will choose something
of interest and invest into that something,
such as a new weight room, that will enhance
a given program at Oak Ridge. All former
cadets, as well as parents of current cadets,
are invited to add both tangible and intangible
gifts to ORMA. This Friday, for example,
Bob Vogel ’67 will address the Corps during
our weekly Character Development Session.
Further examples are the efforts seen in
the work of Jim Savage and Bill Northrop,
both of the Class of 1963, who have created
and instituted a museum that is the envy
of all military schools in America. The
list goes on.
On
another note, Oak Ridge Military Academy
will be hosting an Open House on Saturday,
February 9, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. until
Noon. Cadets will be giving tours while
the Admissions Personnel will be answering
questions by prospective parents and students.
On Sunday, February 10, 2008, the Academy
will participate in the Annual Summer Camp
Fair. This event will be held at Saint
Mary's School in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Mrs. Amber Coble, Deputy Director of Admissions,
will be there from Noon until 4:00 p.m.
to answer questions about Oak Ridge Military
Academy's Summer Camp Programs. Additionally,
Mr. Jad Davis, Director of Admissions,
will be leading the School Fair at the
Marriott in Raleigh (across from the Crabtree
Valley Mall) from Noon until 5:00 p.m.
The
ORMA 2007-2008 Annual Fund is in full force.
It began in July, 2007, and runs through
June 30, 2008. The Annual Fund provides
much needed funding for every department
throughout the Academy. The cost of education
for an ORMA cadet is approximately $3,200
more than the tuition and fee. The Annual
Fund plays a major role in making up the
cash shortfall. This fund is vitally important
as it is an item in the Academy's budget.
The money supports our outstanding academic
program and the overall operations of the
Academy. .It provides opportunities to
support and academically challenge each
and every cadet. We invite you to support
our Annual Fund with your tax deductible
gift. Without the generosity of our alumni,
parents, family, faculty, staff, and friends,
Oak Ridge Military Academy would not be
able to offer this quality of education
to our most precious resource - our children.

Oak
Ridge Military Academy Featured in New
Series “Dale Jr. – Shifting Gears” on ESPN
NASCAR
star Dale Earnhardt Jr. is the focus of
a new television series on ESPN, Dale Jr.
– Shifting Gears, premiering prior to this
month’s opening of the 2008 NASCAR season.
The five-part series chronicles Earnhardt’s
move from Dale Earnhardt Inc., the team
founded by his father, to Hendrick Motorsports,
in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
“We were working on a new DVD about my life and the guys kept getting more
and more footage, so they decided to put a whole TV show together to document
the biggest career decision I’ve ever made,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “The past
year of my life has been a roller coaster, and it’s pretty cool that we’re
giving everyone an inside look at how everything came together.”
The
first episode airs Friday, Feb. 8, at 7
p.m. ET on ESPN2. The series provides viewers
with a behind-the-scenes look at the personal,
corporate and competitive ramifications
involved with the five-time NASCAR Most
Popular Driver award recipient changing
teams. Dale Jr. – Shifting Gears is produced
by Earnhardt Jr.’s Hammerhead Entertainment,
a division of JR Motorsports, in cooperation
with Hendrick Motorsports and is presented
by the National Guard.
Oak
Ridge Military Academy, where Dale Jr.
and his sister, Kelley Earnhardt Elledge,
attended school in the late 1980’s has
a role in part two of the series. “ORMA
has a significant part in Episode 2 airing
next Friday, February 15th. The episode
highlights our trip to Oak Ridge last fall
as well as provides viewers with Dale's
personal thoughts on what the school meant
to him and how he feels it impacted who
he is today,” said Kelly Earnhardt Elledge;
Vice President and General Manager of JR
Motorsports LLC.
Three
of the five episodes of Shifting Gears
air on ESPN2 in the nine days prior to
the Daytona 500, including following ESPN2’s
live coverage of NASCAR Nationwide Series
qualifying on Friday, Feb. 15, and the
NASCAR Nationwide Series Camping World
300 at Daytona on Saturday, Feb. 16. The
final two episodes air on ESPN in prime
time the week of the July 27 Allstate 400
at the Brickyard, ESPN’s first live NASCAR
Sprint Cup event of the season.
“We’re delighted to be included in this series. Dale and Kelley have shown
a great deal of support and generosity to Oak Ridge. We are truly honored and
grateful to be associated with them,” Colonel Roy Berwick, Head of School at
Oak Ridge remarked.
The
pre-season episodes reveal never-before-seen
footage from the 2007 press conferences
and fan response to the announcements.
Shifting Gears also chronicles the design
process of the new paint schemes, the makings
of Earnhardt Jr.’s Adidas fire suit and
how the driver of the No. 88 Mountain Dew
AMP/National Guard Chevrolet handles the
pressure of working with new sponsors as
he prepares for his first season with Hendrick
Motorsports.
The
final two episodes, each one hour in length,
will catch up with Earnhardt Jr. and the
Hendrick team as he chases his first NASCAR
Sprint Cup championship.
