Robert
(Bobby) Barbera, B.S.
Chair, History Department
Robert
(Bobby) Barbera, or “Major B” as he is
affectionately known to his students,
has been an institution at Oak Ridge
Military Academy for more than four decades.
Raised in Goldsboro, NC, Bobby attended
Appalachian State University, where he
majored in history and played on the
tennis team for four years and on the
soccer team for one. Since 1967, Bobby
has served ORMA as a history teacher,
athletic coach, Commandant of Cadets,
and dorm parent. He has taught every
subject offered within the social studies
curriculum, and he has coached nearly
every varsity sport offered by the school.
In 1972 he started the girl’s athletic
program at Oak Ridge. Presently he teaches
American Government and World Religions,
an elective course offered by the history
department. He has served as the Chair
of the history department since July
2005. He is also the head coach of the
ORMA tennis team. In his free time, “Major
B” enjoys playing tennis and golf with
his wife, Mary Lloyd, reading history,
and listening to beach music.
